Bespoke Floor Fitting

Fitting and finishing a herringbone floor

Bespoke fitting of a  traditional oak herringbone block floor with a single brick border, and cleverly chose the smaller blocks to increase the amount of pattern in the floor. After preparing the subfloor, a centre line was measured and the pattern infilled. The boundary line was then cut (measuring twice and cutting once)! and the single brick border laid. Solid oak thresholds were fitted to connect the adjoining rooms.

Fitting reclaimed blocks

The client had purchased reclaimed pine blocks and had patiently and painstakingly cleaned the old bitumen adhesive off the underside of every one taking many, many hours! The hallway initially had a primer applied to the concrete and was then carefully measured and marked to fit the blocks in a ‘London brick pattern’. Once fitted they were sanded and stained with a warm ‘walnut’ stain to really make the figure and grain ‘pop’! The floor was finally finished with Matt lacquers. Despite the challenges fitting old reclaimed blocks present they really give a fabulous and unique finish

Reclaimed pine boards

The client had purchased some lovely ‘turn of the century ‘ reclaimed boards from a local reclamation yard (Tim at Treesave) and combined them with some original boards they had managed to salvage from elsewhere in the property. We prepared the plywood subfloor and then cut and fitted the boards, face nailing with tapered cleats. We then machine sanded the boards working through the paper grades from coarse to fine and finally finished them with 3 coats of a Matt Junkers floor lacquer. A really enjoyable project to work on and love reusing old materials, bring 100 year old boards back to life!

Fitting a solid oak reclaimed floor with bespoke hand crafted hatch

The existing carpet and hardboard were lifted and the original subfloor timbers fully treated for any damp/woodworm. New solid oak, tongue and grooved boards were then cut and fitted, secretly nailing to avoid any visible face nails. A hatch door to the wine/beer cellar was constructed, using a ‘cross board’ direction to create a feature piece (including the beautiful original brass fittings, cleaned and polished). It was then lightly sanded and hand stained to a warm, mid oak colour to better suit the age of the property. It was completed with 3 coats of a Matt, commercial grade Junkers lacquer. A great floor to fit and I always love the solid feel of boards nailed into joists (old skool)! 🙂
